Domino's is one of the most cited examples of successful digital transformation, and for good reason. In 2008, the company was struggling: its stock price had fallen below $3, customer satisfaction was among the lowest in the industry, and the brand was widely mocked. By 2025, Domino's stock price had risen above $400, and the company had become one of the most successful restaurant chains in the world.
What Domino's did:
- Created urgency by publicly acknowledging its problems — CEO Patrick Doyle admitted on camera that the pizza was not good and committed to fixing it. This candor created organizational alignment around the need for change.
- Invested heavily in technology — Domino's built an in-house technology team of over 400 engineers and transformed ordering from phone-based to digital-first. By 2020, over 75% of orders came through digital channels.
- Reimagined the customer experience — The company launched ordering via mobile app, smart TV, voice assistants, smartwatches, and even Twitter. The "Domino's Tracker" gave customers real-time visibility into their order status.
- Used data to drive decisions — Every digital interaction generated data that informed menu decisions, store operations, delivery optimization, and marketing.
- Changed the organizational identity — Domino's began describing itself as "a technology company that happens to sell pizza," signaling that digital was not a side project but the core of the business.
Why it worked: Domino's succeeded because the transformation was led by the CEO, was rooted in solving a real business problem (declining sales and brand perception), invested in building internal digital capabilities rather than outsourcing them, and delivered visible results quickly (the "Pizza Turnaround" campaign showed customers the company was changing). It addressed all four of McKinsey's 4Ds.
Example 2: GE Digital — A Cautionary Tale¶
General Electric's digital transformation, launched with great ambition under CEO Jeff Immelt in the mid-2010s, is one of the most instructive failure cases in business history. GE invested over $4 billion in building GE Digital, a new business unit that aimed to become the leading industrial IoT platform provider through its Predix platform.
What went wrong:
- Overambition without focus — GE tried to simultaneously transform its own operations, build a software platform, and sell that platform to external customers. Each of these is a massive undertaking; doing all three at once was overwhelming.
- Technology-first thinking — The Predix platform was an engineering-led initiative that prioritized technical sophistication over customer needs. GE built capabilities that customers had not asked for and did not adopt.
- Cultural mismatch — GE's industrial culture, built on Six Sigma and long product development cycles, clashed with the agile, iterative approach required for software development. Engineers accustomed to shipping turbines could not easily adapt to shipping code.
- Leadership instability — Frequent leadership changes at GE Digital undermined continuity. The unit had multiple leaders in just a few years, each with different priorities.
- Financial pressure — As GE's core industrial businesses weakened, the company could not sustain the massive investment digital transformation required. GE Digital was eventually downsized and restructured.
The lesson: GE's failure illustrates several common pitfalls simultaneously — technology-first thinking, underestimating cultural barriers, overscoping the initiative, and losing leadership focus. For MBA students, the critical takeaway is that even a $250 billion company with enormous resources can fail at transformation if the strategic, organizational, and cultural dimensions are neglected.
Example 3: DBS Bank — Transforming a Traditional Bank in Asia¶
DBS Bank, headquartered in Singapore, provides a compelling example of digital transformation success in a heavily regulated, traditional industry. Under CEO Piyush Gupta, DBS transformed from a conventional bank into one that was named "World's Best Digital Bank" by Euromoney multiple times.
What DBS did:
- Adopted a startup mentality — DBS adopted the mantra "Live more, Bank less," signaling that the bank's purpose was to simplify customers' lives through seamless digital experiences, not to sell banking products.
- Built a technology platform — DBS invested in cloud infrastructure, APIs, and microservices architecture, enabling it to deploy new features rapidly. The bank moved from quarterly releases to deploying code thousands of times per year.
- Redesigned the customer journey — Rather than digitizing existing processes, DBS mapped the entire customer journey and redesigned it from the customer's perspective. For example, applying for a mortgage was reduced from weeks to minutes.
- Invested in data and AI — DBS built a centralized data platform and deployed AI and ML across operations — from credit scoring to fraud detection to personalized product recommendations.
- Changed the culture — DBS ran extensive internal programs including hackathons, digital academies, and a "GANDALF" initiative (a playful acronym for the tech giants it aspired to emulate: Google, Amazon, Netflix, DBS, Apple, LinkedIn, Facebook) to shift the organizational mindset.
Why it worked: DBS succeeded because the transformation was CEO-led, customer-journey-focused (not technology-focused), sequenced properly (operational backbone first, then digital platform), invested in culture change alongside technology, and measured results rigorously. Using MIT CISR's framework, DBS methodically built its operational backbone before layering on digital innovation capabilities.
Common Pitfalls¶
Starting with Technology Instead of Strategy
The most pervasive pitfall in digital transformation is allowing technology selection to drive strategy rather than the reverse. When an executive declares "We need an AI strategy" or "We need to move to the cloud," the implicit assumption is that technology adoption is the goal. It is not. The goal is solving a business problem or seizing a market opportunity. Technology is a means to that end. Successful transformations start with questions like "How can we reduce customer churn by 30%?" or "How can we enter new markets faster?" — and then identify the technologies that enable those outcomes.
Underinvesting in Change Management
Organizations routinely allocate 90% or more of their transformation budget to technology and 10% or less to change management — training, communication, process redesign, and organizational restructuring. This ratio should be much closer to 60/40 or even 50/50 for transformations that require significant behavioral change. The most elegant technology solution is worthless if employees do not adopt it, customers do not use it, or managers do not trust its outputs. Budget for change management as aggressively as you budget for technology.
Pursuing Transformation Without Fixing the Foundation
MIT CISR's research is unambiguous on this point: organizations that attempt to build digital innovation capabilities on top of fragmented, unreliable core systems will fail. If your ERP data is inconsistent, your processes are not standardized, and your departments operate as silos, adding a digital platform on top will simply create a faster way to make bad decisions. Fix the operational backbone first. This is unglamorous work — data cleansing, process standardization, system integration — but it is the foundation that everything else rests on.
Declaring Victory Too Early
A successful pilot is not a successful transformation. Organizations frequently celebrate the launch of a new app, the completion of a cloud migration, or the deployment of an analytics dashboard as evidence that the transformation is complete. It is not. Transformation is complete when digital capabilities are embedded in the organization's culture, operations, and competitive position — when digital is "how we work" rather than a project that IT is running. This typically takes 3-5 years of sustained effort, not a 12-month technology implementation.
